What Otoplasty (Scoop Ear Surgery) is?

Otoplasty, i.e. scoop ear aesthetic surgery is the operation of ear shape correction and adjustment to the facial structure of the person.

Is there an age limit for the surgery?

Physiologically, ear development of 6-year-old child reaches about 90% of adult’s ear size. For such reason, we recommend waiting for age of 6 years in order to have a surgery. Another important aspect of this age is that it is the preschool period. In order to escape the friends’ mockery at school once it is started, sometimes we state that the surgery should be proceeded during “the summer holidays before the school starts”. For adults, if there is no medical restriction, then there is no age limit for the surgery.

What kind of complaints do the patients apply with for the Otoplasty Surgery?

In case of pediatric patients, the family demands for the surgery in order to ensure that the child is not mocked in social life or at school and is not psychologically affected. In case of adults, complaints such as not feeling beautiful, not willing to look in the mirror and take photos, especially for women, inability to make certain hairstyles can also be a reason for surgery request.

How does the surgery process work?

Once the patient with a complaint of scoop ear is evaluated, we take some photo shoots. We calculate head-ear separation angles on photographs. As a foresight, we show the change that we can provide with the surgery. Once the decision on the surgery is made, we start the process.

Is it possible to perform another procedure or surgery along with Rhinoplasty?

Of course, it is. The most common surgery we do meanwhile is the nose aesthetics. However, jaw aesthetics, face filling or fat injection, correction of nasal bone curvature with existing breathing problems (septoplasty due to deviated septum), chronic sinusitis surgeries can also be proceeded.

How long does the surgery last? How is post-surgical care and bandaging realized?

The surgery takes approximately 1.5-2 hours. The bandages that cover the head and protect both ears are used. These bandages are removed in 2 days. The tennis band is worn for about 1 week. During this period, in order to escape the risk of bleeding under the ear skin the patient is observed once in two days.
